Sri Lanka Hill Country

The first two days we spent in Kandy – a scenic city built on steep hills.  There were a few valley bottoms with some flat land but most of the city is built on incredibly steep hills.  Our hotel (the Amaya Hills – highly recommend it) was well up the side of one of the hills which gave it spectacular views but led to a white knuckle trip through the switch backs every time we drove up.  Our mini van was too long for one of the turns and so the driver had to make part of the turn then reverse towards a precipice on steep incline and then get back into first gear and move forward again.  About half the time he could manage this without stalling but then the wheels would spin for a brief instant before catching.   I dreaded that switchback and we arranged our excursions so we only needed to leave/return to the hotel once per day.

After we left Kandy we went up slope even further to Nuware Eliya which Chandrasiri called “Little England” being on the mountain plateau it was rarely hot and of cold and misty (our room had a space heater that came in very handy).  It was a popular refuge for the English colonials who would go up there to avoid the worst of the heat and also enjoy English style vegetables which grew there easily – we saw plenty of carrot, onion and strawberry fields in addition to hill after hill of tea.

More Vacation Pictures

This batch is mostly pictures of us at one beach or another.  We spent a short time on a beach in La Jolla, California where the kids enjoyed the waves and we saw a distant brown smudge on a far rock that was almost certainly a seal.   In tamer waters we spent some time on Devil’s lake as well as Lake Superior.

A Trip to the Movies

Last weekend we headed over to Bahrain to catch a show and shop for a few things it is difficult to find here.  We hadn’t been in a while but we needed to activate our new visas at any rate and things seemed calm.  Nora clearly listens to dinner conversations as she made us promise to turn around and come home if we “see any war.”   In the event we didn’t see any war at all and you wouldn’t know there was recent unpleasantness if it weren’t for the armored battalion camped around the remnants of the pearl roundabout.

Waiting for the movie to start we hit a coffee shop across the mall where I snapped a few pictures with the iphone.

A Few Random Pictures

Here’s a few images from recent events.  The big event was a shopping trip to Khobar secure a new bed.  With traffic and construction the roads are as bad as ever and when the first store didn’t have anything we wanted we ended up going clear across town towards Dammam to hit the Seally showroom.   The had exactly what we were looking for–one big block of firm memory foam.  It needs to be shipped in from Jeddah so we are still waiting.  Soon insh’allah.

Hipstamatic

Here are a few more pictures of Kai and Nora taken on my iphone with the Hipstamatic app.

It looks like Nora will turn into a pretty good cook.  A ruthlessly good cook.  Below is a sample of the dialog she recently had with the pile of mushrooms she was chopping for our dinner.  She will not eat the mushrooms but she is more than happy to chop them up.

Nora (in a deep, menacing voice): “OK mushroom, now it is your turn”
Nora (as mushroom in high pitch pleading): “No, please! Not me, Heeellllppp!”
Nora (in deep, menacing voice)
: “Ooooh my Dad is gonnna looooove you!”  <chop> <chop> <chop>

Let the Activities Begin!

After school activities are back in full swing and, with Nora turning 4, she is able to start joining her own.   She started preschool this week and is enrolled in a dance class as well.  Kai has joined cub scouts and is continuing with his soccer team, art school and Karate.  It keeps us all busy after school.  Here are a few pictures.  For those that seem grainy and out of focus that is on purpose.  I was using the hipstamic app on my iphone to get that old-photo-nostalgia.  It takesa very fancy camera to get pictures that bad so easily!
