It is only mid-April but already summer is sending reminders that it is soon on its way. Daytime temps probably haven’t hit 100 quite yet but we had a humid day in the 90’s this weekend to remind us what is in store. There are probably a few more temperate days yet to be had and then six months of crushing wet heat.

Pony Rides
Last weekend we headed over to the hobby farm for the Pony Rides for Charity event. A local group was raising money for an orphanage in Africa–some of the teenagers were selling juice and caramel popcorn, there were hay rides and, of course, the “pony” rides. The ponies were in truth some very beautiful horses which led to what was perhaps the inevitable question from Nora. “Dad, when can we get our own pony”? The caramel popcorn was also a hit and I guess we need to get the kids out more because it was a new concept for them that left them highly impressed. Popcorn is good and who doesn’t like caramel but putting them together–brilliance!
Soap Box Derby
This last weekend was the Cub Scout Soap Box Derby or “Serp Box Derby” as Nora calls it. The day started out perfect with warm temps but some cloud cover. By the time the Tiger Scouts started racing at noon, however, the clouds had disappeared and the sun was out in force. With plenty of sunscreen though we avoided any major sunburns. For those familiar with Dhahran the race started at the top of Peninsula (the perimeter road) near Rainbow. There is a good hill there and along with the starting ramp they managed to build up some speed as they raced towards the jebels.

100 Days and the Blue & Gold Banquet
The 100th day of school is coming up–a very big deal. Crystal has been working to bake, frost, and bag cookies in the shapes of 1’s and 0’s. This weekend work on the poster will commence — the aim is to create a display that best captures the essence of the number 100. In other news Kai was recently promoted to Tiger Scout at the annual Blue and Gold Banquet.
A Few Random Pictures
Here’s a few images from recent events. The big event was a shopping trip to Khobar secure a new bed. With traffic and construction the roads are as bad as ever and when the first store didn’t have anything we wanted we ended up going clear across town towards Dammam to hit the Seally showroom. The had exactly what we were looking for–one big block of firm memory foam. It needs to be shipped in from Jeddah so we are still waiting. Soon insh’allah.
