Charity Horse Rides

One of Kai’s preschool teachers organized pony rides for charity a few weeks back.  Her family has been doing charity work in Ethiopia/Eritrea for generations.  The offered pony rides, sold cookies in horse shapes (we had to leave with two of those, as you can imagine) and sold hand woven baskets from Ethiopia to raise money.

Nora, having not seen too many horses in her life, exclaimed excitedly “CAM–OO” (translation: camel) when we got there.  It took a fair bit of practice, but by the end she seems to have understood that she actually rode a horse.

Making Faces in the Backyard

We are at that pleasant time of year when it is nice and warm ((I started drafting this post two days ago when this was true but today the high is 104 and the sky is full of dust)) but not too hot to play outside with the wiggle water snake in the backyard.  After a session getting everyone wet and muddy ((the wiggle water snake doesn’t discriminate)) we hosed off, had a snack at the table in the backyard, and practiced making faces.

Dinosaurs!

Kai has been really into dinosaurs recently so we dug out a BBC series that Art and Ellen got for us years ago called Walking with the Dinosaurs.  It is still a stunning series and it really got Kai fired up, so much so that he wanted to get out his dinosaur costume from last Halloween.  ((We’ve agreed that it is an Allosaurus outfit though a case could be made for Godzilla)).   Of course Nora needed to get her ladybug outfit out as well.   Even though she was dressed as a ladybug; I think she was pretty convinced it was another type of dinosaur.

Kai’s New Bike

As I mentioned, the pictures were getting a little backed up and I’m just getting around to posting them now.  These pictures are from a trip to the park after Kai got his new bike at the end of March.   It took him a little while to get used to the pedaling but now he is zipping along.  Of course he likes to look around as he is biking especially to see if anyone is appreciating how fast he is going.  So far no major spills though.

Easter

I know that Easter came and went some time ago but I haven’t been updating this site recently so the pictures are somewhat backed up.  We just got back from a 5 day trip to Bangkok where Crystal presented at the NESA Spring Educators Conference.  I’ll have a couple of galleries from that trip posted once I get the pictures sorted.   Here is a gallery of what happened on the Friday after Easter (we waited for our weekend).  Enjoy!

More cell phone pics…

Nora runs to the commissaryKai gets a haircutI’m trying to get more milage out of the fact that my phone has a camera.  You’d think that would come in handy and I’d use it all the time but the truth is I rarely think of it.  Also, it takes really bad pictures in all but the best lighting.  However, with that said these two are viewable.   The first picture is of Nora running ahead of us on the way to the mail center.  When she really gets going she throws her arms back (to reduce drag I assume).  The second picture is of Kai getting a hair cut.  He’s come a long way since the days of “hold him down and cut it short, quick!”   He actaully seemed to enjoy it this time but did establish the ground rule of “only scissors, no buzzer.”

Alas, poor Yorick…

Alas poor Yorick

We bought a coconut at the commissary and had a little bit of fun with it the other day.   “AlasMonkeyFace, poor Yorick” occured to me as Kai was examining the “face” and it made for some cute pictures that capture the moment.  Your high school English teacher gets bonus points if you get the reference.   After lots of shaking and guessing what was inside we opened it in the backyard and had a taste.   Nora liked it, Kai didn’t.
